Image Detail: "Ka Moka" - Frans Thoka
An exhibition of work by two exciting emerging talents both addressing the constraints placed on the black and female body in ways both political and representational. Both artists take an innovative approach to unusual material in their work to speak to the pressure which the body is put under through
misogyny, oppressive ideologies and covert racism. And yet both find a way to respond through the meaning in their work and mediums – Fathema through portraying the body under erasure and in emergence in her sculpture, and Frans through the symbolism of the traditional Basotho and prison blankets through these he re-evaluates the continuing trauma of the black body in the post-Apartheid landscape.
